Depression isn't always suicide notes and pill bottles,sometimes, it's all smiles and fake laughter. Depression isn't always easy to notice.
Mental Health is the capacity of each person to feel, think and act in ways that allow them to enjoy life and eat with all the challenges they face. The Importance of Mental Health in Youths:
helps them develop psychologically, emotional, creatively, and intellectually
initiates, develop and sustain mutual satisfying personal relationships
encourages them to face problems and setbacks and learn from them
development of a success transition to adulthood
Every youth has the potential for successful healthy development with the correct guidance and support. Research has suggested that youth development greatly affect/directs their thoughts/actions as an adult. Mentees help youths by providing wisdom of "the path/road travelled before them".
Mentoring motivates increased student involvement in the homes and at school. Youths with intense of high-quality relationships is in direct correlation to improved academic motivation, better grades and higher aspirations for their future.
Youths need to know that they are not alone or the only ones who have experience negative feelings (sadness, hopelessness). Some feelings of sadness are normal emotional stages of life. However, when that sadness consumes their life to the point they want to give up, it creates thoughts of hopelessness. Hopelessness is one of the top reasons why youths thinking of self-harm/suicide. Mentoring is a successful tool that has made a direct impact on transformational thinking.
Overall, the benefits of mentoring are the underpinning development of self-confidence, a sense of self-worth, and improvement of communication and life skills. One goal our organization will be working towards is working with schools so there is more mental health awareness for the students and teachers with the hope of decreasing the stigmas of mental health.This change is important because good mental health is the foundation of youths' intellectual and emotional growth.
